US gets flagged by Denmark as potential security concern

(MENAFN) According to general reporting, Denmark’s latest annual intelligence review has, for the first time, identified the United States as a potential security concern. The assessment points to Washington’s intensified pursuit of strategic objectives in the Arctic, as well as renewed pressure regarding Greenland.

Greenland, a self-governing territory with a population below 60,000, has increasingly become a focal point in tensions between Denmark and the US. Reports have noted that US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed interest in bringing the island under American control, describing it as a strategically critical location due to its position in the Arctic and its natural resources. He also declined to rule out the possibility of using military force to achieve that goal.

In its publicly released risk evaluation, Denmark’s intelligence service stated that the global environment is becoming more adversarial, with major powers deploying economic, technological, and military tools more aggressively to secure national objectives. Beyond its established analyses of Russia and China, the report introduced a new section titled ‘The US is changing the agenda,’ explaining that Washington is increasingly focused on advancing its own priorities and is “now using its economic and technological strength as a tool of power, also toward allies and partners.”

The intelligence service further noted that the US “no longer rules out using military force, even against allies.”

This shift in tone represents a significant departure for Denmark, whose security posture has long relied on the US-led alliance framework. The report also underscored growing unpredictability surrounding Washington’s long-term strategic commitments, including the extent to which the US will continue to function as Europe’s primary security guarantor. Washington has repeatedly pressed European NATO members to assume a greater share of their defense burden, particularly by substantially increasing military expenditures.

The assessment added that intensifying great-power rivalry in the Arctic has sharply elevated global interest in the region. It emphasized that “This applies in particular to the United States’ growing interest in Greenland and its importance to US national security,” signaling that the island’s strategic value is increasingly shaping Washington’s geopolitical calculations.
