Passengers Criticize Lufthansa, Munich Airport After Being Stuck During Snowstorm

(MENAFN) Lufthansa and Munich Airport are facing intense scrutiny after hundreds of travelers were forced to spend the night aboard planes during a snowstorm, raising questions about crisis management at one of Europe’s busiest airports.

According to reports, roughly 500 passengers were affected when heavy snowfall on Thursday evening led to cancellations, leaving travelers stranded on five Lufthansa Group flights bound for Singapore, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Graz, and Venice.

Media outlets sharply criticized the response. One newspaper described the situation as a “Nightmare at Munich Airport: Passengers locked in planes all night,” while a leading tabloid questioned officials’ characterization of the ordeal as merely an “inconvenience,” asking, “Are you serious?”

Aviation expert and pilot Mirko Miesen also condemned the handling of the incident: “At this point, I really wonder why people are treated with such ignorance, knowing that they are sitting there in a confined space, perhaps even with children, perhaps with elderly people, in a confined space in a passenger plane.”

Lufthansa explained that planes had to remain at a remote parking area due to airport regulations, as terminal gates were unavailable and airport buses were limited. “Crews continuously informed the guests and provided them with the best possible care with the drinks and food available on board,” the airline said. “Only after hours could the passengers be picked up by the buses and thus leave the aircraft.”

A Munich Airport spokesperson attributed the disruption to “very tense” weather conditions overnight from Thursday to Friday, which led to widespread delays and cancellations.
