European, Canadian Leaders Applaud US–Iran Ceasefire

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, a number of European heads of state, together with Canada, expressed approval of the recently declared truce between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the importance of reaching a "substantive negotiated settlement." Representatives from France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Spain—alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa—released a collective statement praising the temporary halt in hostilities and acknowledging Pakistan and other partners for their role in facilitating the agreement.

"The goal must now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war within the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic means. We strongly encourage quick progress towards a substantive negotiated settlement," leaders said.

They further stressed the necessity of safeguarding civilians in Iran and maintaining stability across the region, highlighting that the accord has the potential to prevent a major global energy crisis.

"We call upon all sides to implement the ceasefire, including in Lebanon. Our Governments will contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," the statement added.
